Chapter 9
The festival’s final red carpet event went so smoothly compared to the first evening that even the producer offered reluctant praise to Phoebe, whom he still believed was Skye.
“I have to hand it to you, Skye, whatever was bothering you last Sunday night is gone. Good job.”
“Thanks.” She handed the microphone and headset over and headed into The Chateau. A local network was broadcasting the event with a famous emcee flown in from New York, so Phoebe, or rather “Skye,” was by contract not working the actual event.
The ballroom was a cacophony of excitement when she entered, the ceremony still a few minutes from its start. She looked for Prescott at his assigned table, but their seats were empty. She’d interviewed him on the red carpet again and thankfully this time hadn’t knocked out his tooth. The local dentist had worked a miracle and glued it back in place.
“Skye Colton.” A petite woman with familiar features, dressed in a killer green dress, addressed her. Phoebe didn’t remember seeing her at all this week, and certainly not in the last hour during the arrival interviews. But somehow, she knew this woman.
“Yes?” Phoebe tried to keep her features relaxed. She was still Skye until the festival was over, which meant until this awards ceremony finished.
“You’ve got some damn nerve, going after Prescott the way you have. Who do you think you are?”
“I beg your pardon?” Her nape tingled with warning.
“Prescott is a man who has very particular tastes. To throw yourself at him when he’s so vulnerable, and to think he’s going to be around after this week, is wishful thinking on your part.”
Ariella Forsythe. Phoebe hadn’t recognized her with a different hair color and style. But Ariella’s usual beauty was marred by the pure hatred on her face.
“I’m sorry if you got the wrong impression, but Prescott is a grown man. He can make his own choices.”
The other woman’s face became pinched, her eyes narrowed to mean slits, and Phoebe wondered if the woman was about to slap her. She tensed, trusting her body’s instincts that she was under attack, even if it remained solely verbal.
“There’s a name for women like you, Skye.” Ariella spat the words at her. “Slut comes to mind. Stay away from Prescott or I’m going to ruin your professional reputation. You’ll never land anything more than the Roaring Springs Film Festival whore.”
“Escort sounds more professional, doesn’t it? Although date and companion work for me. Prescott, too.” Phoebe wasn’t going to give in to this woman. She was acting as Skye, after all, and her twin wouldn’t take any guff off a jealous ex-lover of Prescott’s, either. “If you have a problem with Prescott, you need to take it up with him.” She looked past the much shorter woman’s head and nodded. “In fact, I think I can see him walking in now. Why don’t we—” She looked to meet the frightful gaze again, but only an empty space existed where Ariella had uttered her ugly words.
